In a move characteristic of his own brand of politics, former U.S. President Donald Trump has nominated Nick Adams—a hardline conservative commentator and self-styled “alpha male” and native Australian—next U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia. Adams has been a vocal public supporter for years of values typical of the Trump era, and he has the media-friendly, hardline profile for a high-visibility diplomatic posting in Southeast Asia.
Nick Adams, 40, a native and true blue Sydneysider, began life as an urban councillor and brief deputy mayor. He relocated to America in 2012 and was naturalized in 2021. Since then, he has been a political class favorite of Trump’s, showing up on frequent appearances on far-right media outlets and social media with ultra-hardline commentary on masculinity, patriotism, and right-wing values.
Trump’s public declaration boasted Adams as a “patriot, successful businessman, and bestselling author” who has never faltered as a champion of “American greatness.” Adams is the creator of the Foundation for Liberty and American Greatness (FLAG), a pro-American values and civic education advocacy organization for children. He has authored numerous books like Green Card Warrior and Alpha Kings, the latter of which Trump went out of his way to personally author its foreword for.
The Adams’ appointment has received mixed opinions. His supporters see him as a high-energy, charismatic individual who will be bluntly articulate on behalf of U.S. foreign policy. His critics point to his inexperience at diplomatic postings and his inflammatory rhetoric, such as remarks demonized as misogynistic and culturally insensitive. These are put into relief by Malaysia‘s status as Muslim-majority nation and having sensitive foreign policy stances like the one taken with Palestine and China.
Strategically, Malaysia is in the middle of the Indo-Pacific, where China-U.S. economic relations tightrope is balanced. The ambassadorship will remain at the forefront of negotiations through economic ties, regional security, and confidence in diplomacy. Adams’ nomination is yet another indication that Trump is still willing to trade ideological passion and media spotlight for the cost of conventional diplomatic credentials.
After approval by the U.S. Senate, Adams is succeeding Edgard Kagan and will formally be America’s representative in Kuala Lumpur. It is an assertive diplomatic move and raises controversy over the changing dynamics of the American foreign service under the Trump-endorsed leadership.
