Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu officially nominated the name of former US President Donald Trump for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for his actions on spreading peace and stability in the Middle East region, reported. The nomination takes place against the recent background of Israel-Hamas ceasefire talks and when Trump is still engaged in Middle Eastern politics after he left the White House.
Netanyahu recently sent the nomination letter, attributing Trump’s leadership to making the historic Abraham Accords possible. The normalization accords witnessed during Trump’s presidency brought diplomatic relations between Israel and a number of Arab nations, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco. Netanyahu referred to the handover of the Accords as a Middle East political game-changer, securing a solid ground for future coordination and putting an end to the constant aggression that had been in existence.
Netanyahu handed Trump the nomination letter during dinner in New Jersey in appreciation of the latter’s efforts at pursuing peace in the Middle East. Netanyahu and Trump also sat down for unofficial discussions regarding the ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas. The three essential conditions for a lasting ceasefire, as cited by Netanyahu, were restated: demolition of the military headquarters of Hamas, deportation of their commanders, and complete disarmament.
The Israeli prime minister reaffirmed that his government would accept the temporary ceasefire and humanitarian negotiations but a future peace agreement would, as a priority, prioritize Israel security as the first item on the agenda and entail long-term Gaza military occupation. Netanyahu reaffirmed he is against approving endorsement of the Palestinian full state unless Israel security is guaranteed.
Trump, who was nominated for the 2018, 2020, and 2021 Nobel Peace Prize, accepted the assignation. Trump indicated that he was interested in continuing on the path of pursuing peace and would have hoped that the politic template that had been established during his term would be taken up and nurtured. Trump further stated that in case he were to bere-elected, the Abraham Accords would be taken to other Arab countries.
The process of choosing the Nobel Peace Prize is primarily secret, yet politicians like Netanyahu are able to nominate publicly. The winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced in October.
